Alex Pate was born and raised in Richmond County, Cape Breton. He graduated from L'Ardoise Cons'd School in 1980 and went on to receive a diploma in commercial illustration. His paintings of Atlantic Canada are mostly in private collections throughout Canada and eastern United States.
